Conversations with Parlotones lead singer, Kahn Morbee

Parlotones lead singer Kahn Morbee still leading the pack has added solo to his musical CV.

The Parlotones? Who doesn't know them in this day and age? Especially if you are South African, because we believe local is lekker, and if you still don't know who they are; you have clearly been living in the Stone Ages. Recently I sat down with the lead singer, Kahn Morbee to get the lowdown on his successful career with the band, and why he decided to also turn solo whilst still wowing the crowds with his bandmates.

Here's what he had to say:

L.A Dosage: For those that are unfamiliar with your music, please sum it up with 3 words.

KM: Pretty, flippen cool.

(Well I honestly did not see that one coming if I may so myself, but that's what makes the coolest guy right?)

L.A Dosage: You started out with The Parlotones, and still are with them right? Why the sudden change to solo?

KM: Well, I write a lot of music and very passionate about songwriting. I decided to be different and promote myself and its also healthy to have many other interests outside the band.

L.A Dosage: What do you think of the overall music industry today? Think its getting better, in-between or faltering?

KM: Its getting worse actually. Too many expectations that art should be free. On the other hand its in-between. Some artists are carving careers without any ties to labels and some are getting worse since the digital ages took over.

L.A Dosage: What are the 5 things you can't live without?

KM: Uhm I'd say my toothbrush&toothpaste, music, my guitar, loved ones and well, oxygen.

L.A Dosage: What's the first song you ever remember hearing?

KM: There's so many. Probably something from Paul Simon and Queen.

L.A Dosage: What song of yours are you most proud of and why?

KM: Fight back- I was on tour with another band and reading Nelson Mandela's 'Long Walk To Freedom'. It somewhat had a significant meaning with a good life lesson about someone who conquered to save a nation. This always serves as a reminder.

L.A Dosage: People have this image that its non-stop partying as a musician. How far true is this?

KM: There are moments like that but its mostly a lot of hard work and sacrifice.

L.A Dosage: Other than the people you are with now, if you could get any musician; living or dead who would it be?

KM: Definitely Paul McCartney, Freddie Mercury, John Lennon and Morrissey from the now defunct band,The Smiths.

L.A Dosage: How do you balance your music with other obligations?

KM: Its very difficult because you either on tour, recording etc. Absorbs a lot of your time but you have to what you have to do, and make it work.

L.A Dosage: What's next for you since launching your solo career?

KM: I recently launched it. I am on tour promoting my album. The the band is going on tour as well. Touring the UK in March, and end of April it will be a local tour. Then June will be doing festivals for my solo album.

L.A Dosage: The million dollar question. What's your advice for aspiring musicians?

KM: Do it because you love it and for the passion. Practice and remember to always remain humble no matter your success.

Well, that's a wrap from the The LA Dosage. It was a great opportunity chatting to Kahn Morbee. Now I know why I had such a huge crush all those years and The Parlotones is still the to go-to local band.
