🇩🇰🏄 Nick Jacobsen: The Danish Daredevil is hungry for more

"The young guys will dominate the air this year which will be more interesting"

Lars-Hakan Hansson

The Danish daredevil, Nick Jacobsen is set to showcase his technique and perform hair-raising stunts the best way he knows as the Red Bull King of the Air 2021 edition kicks off on Saturday, November 20.

The Covid-19 pandemic has drastically affected lives worldwide and for a certain period of time, everything was on a standstill including sports that people love dearly.

However, according to Jacobsen, he managed to find a way to still keep up his momentum as Denmark beaches were not shut down and that gave him the opportunity to train and keep producing content for sponsors.

The L.A Dosage caught up with the 34-year-old at a media event to hear his thoughts on this year's edition and how he hopes to improve on last year where he finished second to the podium with American rider Jesse Richman winning 2020's King of the Air title.

The L.A Dosage: You came second last year and obviously, things have changed, you know with Covid and. How has that affected your training considering many beaches shut down for the most of it.

Nick Jacobsen: Right that is true, but in Denmark, as soon as lockdown came about back home it wasn’t that restricted back home. You could go to the local supermarket including the beach as well, so it really didn’t affect me. But you know, usually I travel all the time and I didn’t really get to travel out of the country due to Covid restrictions.

The L.A Dosage:  Yeah that makes a lot of sense because majority of the riders would be making their way to Cape Town around this time to start preparing (usually when it is in the January/February window)

Nick Jacobsen: **Laughs** Yeah, and then I would be here for ages, my second home basically. But to be honest, just being back home was a really good for me to spend time with my family and my girlfriend who is pregnant which has been pretty wild.

The L.A Dosage: Ahh that is so precious. Congratulations.

Nick Jacobsen: Hah! Thank you, definitely some big changes you know…

The L.A Dosage: Yeah, and speaking about that, how does … you know with your type of sport and having to travel quite a bit, how does that affect being away from your family?

Nick Jacobsen: Well, like I said earlier, I didn’t really travel too much the past year because it’s Covid. I wouldn’t say that I am praying that it would still like this, but I kind of like that I am not travelling too much anymore. It’s really nice to get some quality time with my sister and my mom, my dad, my girlfriend you know. Just trying to focus on those things, instead of only me, me, me and travel, travel, travel.

The L.A Dosage: Fair enough and understandably so. In the same breath, what do you normally do when you are not competing?

Nick Jacobsen: Well I am not competing, I kite all the time, I am a professional kite boarder that is how I make my living, which includes creating content all the time for sponsors, and I am very involved with the brands that I am sponsored by, so we do a lot of creative stuff on the side, like deciding on new products and feedback on the equipment and stuff like that so I still keep myself pretty busy.

The L.A Dosage: Now down to business. How have you prepared this time around and what are you looking most forward to?

Nick Jacobsen: Ahh, good question.

The L.A Dosage: * laughs *

Nick Jacobsen: *laughs* How do I answer this one? No, it’s a good question though. I was at home in Denmark and I didn’t ride in ages and I think since now there is a good forecast, the event will happen. I can slightly feel that my mindset is changing into a bit more of a warrior mindset you know? Like, I’m here to kill, like I am ready, and I am slowly getting into that mindset now. So I begin in a few days and I might have a more clear answer for you. I am spending a lot of time by myself, I don’t want my surroundings to affect my zone.

The L.A Dosage: How do you get into the zone? In actual fact, how does a kite surfer get into the zone?

Nick Jacobsen: Hmm, I think it is very individual but I think for me, I like to listen to chill music and not keeping myself too busy, by doing too many meetings and whatever, and then I take it day by day. Go to bed early, and wake up early, go for a walk on the beach, you know do what you have to do, don’t overdo it, I don’t want to hang out with too many people, because that gets into your mind you know.

The L.A Dosage: Yeah, makes sense. And when you building up to competition like this what is your training regime? What do you do to prepare yourself, your body and…

Nick Jacobsen: Yeah, I think I am one of the only guys who doesn’t really change a lot, because everything in my professional career is… you know I’m doing okay, so why change that drastically? For example, getting hammered in town and come back before sunrise you know? But I am eating healthy, doing the basics, stretching before bed every evening, and I probably should do more yoga and stuff, but I just find it so boring, don’t tell anyone that **laughs**

The L.A Dosage: It’s our secret… *both laughing*. And just to wrap it up. Let's talk about competition. Besides you, anyone else you think we should be looking out for in particular? The one rider who is going to pose a threat?

Tyrone Bradley/ Red Bull Content Pool

Nick Jacobsen: Yeah, I definitely think Liam Whaley from Spain. He is going to kill it this year, I got my money on him, well it’s on me obviously, but uhm… it’s on him. He’s doing very well; a lot of young guys who I see now are performing extremely well. The thing is due to Corona, they spent some time at home, and they’ve realised that they might be the next big thing, and this is a huge event and they have been training for it for a while. So I think this year might be the last year of the older guys, having a bigger advantage. Liam is just 25-years-old, he’s killing it, so he’ll do well this year, definitely.

Well you heard it here from the man himself. He is ready to bring his warrior in hopes of being on the podium again.

The L.A Dosage will be at Kite Beach, Blouberg, Cape Town for an exciting round of kiteboarding and some epic air stunts.

Till next time. . .
